references about rocks that have messianic overtones 505 - 5 - 7

CM often states that the Bible is an integrated whole. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments the rock and/ or stone is used a type of the Messiah.

All through The Book of Psalms King David referred to God as the rock of salvation, refuge. Jesus is our rock of salvation, our refuge.

Exodus 17:6, “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” Jesus, our living water.

Again in 1 Corinthians 10:4, “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”

Numbers 20:8, "Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.”

Moses was to speak to the rock, a type of Jesus, instead he struck it twice. Strong’s H5553 includes rock as a fortress or a stronghold. Here this rock is a type of Jesus, our fortress, our stronghold and the provider of Living Water. Striking the rock was a harbinger of the crucifixion of Jesus.

Isaiah 8:14-15, “14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.”

1 Peter 2:8, “And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.” Here Jesus is the stone of stumbling to unbelievers, harkening back to Isaiah 8:14-15.

Romans 9:33, “As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Today just the mention of the name Jesus is often an offence to unbelievers.

Isaiah 28:16, “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

The precious corner stone is picked up again in 1 Peter 2:6, “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, Precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”

Ephesians 2:20-21, “20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord”

Matthew 7:24-25 concerns a house built upon a rock, the floods came and the wind blew and beat upon the house but it stood just as our faith does when it is built on Jesus, the precious corner stone, a sure foundation.

List at least three places in Scripture where the word "stone" or "rock" is used as an idiom for our Lord, Jesus Christ 522 - 2-8

Numbers 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them."

Moses was to talk was to speak to the rock, an idiom of Christ, instead he struck it. Thus it appeared that the water came forth through the effort of Moses and not as a gift from God.
Daniel 3:34-35, “Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.”
Jesus, the cornerstone, is the stone that was cut without hands. When Jesus returns at the second coming as the lion of Judah he will come to rule the world with a rod of iron. The earth dwellers will be cut to pieces.

Matthew 16:17-18, “And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

These verses have been used by the Roman Catholic Church to claim that the Pope is in a direct line from the apostle Peter. However, in the following verses Peter clears up any confusion as to who the cornerstone is.

1 Peter 2:6-7, “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner.”

Luke 19:40, “And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.” Although the stones that would cry out should the people hold back their praise is not an idiom for Christ, the passage is very revealing. In the movie "The Sobbing Stone" there were a variety of strange sounds emanating from a plain gray stone. The stone was sobbing and because it was lying under the cross at the Crucifixion and it picked up the voices of people surrounding the cross. Early in the movie there was a drip, drip sound coming from the stone; the sound of the blood of Jesus falling on it.

Added Later:

Deuteronomy 32:3-5, "Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."

Could be any clearer? Jesus is our Rock, the cornerstone of our faith. Luke 20:17, "And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?"
