A word study on “rest” in Hebrews and Psalm 95 542 - 5 -

Psalm 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest (H4496). Here rest can be thought of as “matrimony”, perhaps a foretelling of the bride? Also “an abode, quiet, resting place.” Instead of resting in the “abode” of God, the Israeli wandered in the wilderness for 38 years.

Hebrews 3:

11, “So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my (G3450) rest (G2663).”

18, “And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest (G2663), but to them that believed not?” If we “believed not” as did the Israeli, we risk of losing our “reposing down, abode.”

Hebrews 4:

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest (G2663), any of you should seem to come short of it.”

3, “For we which have believed do enter into rest (G2663), as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest (G2663): although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.”

4, “For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest (G2664) the seventh day from all his works.” Here God has ceased/ completed His creation. IMO, this would be a rest we could have enjoyed with God if not for the fall.

5, “And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest (G2663).”

8, “For if Jesus had given them rest (G2664), then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.” Now the rest is in the future.

9, “There remaineth therefore a rest (G4520) to the people of God.” Rest here is “the repose of Christianity (as a type of heaven).

10, “For he that is entered into his rest (G2663), he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”

11, “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest (G2663), lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”
