Paul tells us to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” and “If God be for us, who can be against us?” In Ephesians 6 we are to “11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Paul includes “the helmet of salvation” and “the shield of faith.” To me, the helmet of salvation helps us to keep our focus by keeping out these negative thoughts that Satan tries to infect our minds with. The “darts and arrows” of Satan bounce off our helmet” which is reinforced by The shield of faith. It seems to me that both “the helmet of salvation” and “the shield of faith” are defensive weapons to help us in keeping our mind stayed on Jesus.
The “sword of the spirit” suggests more of an offensive weapon with which we can be prayer warriors for God.
Paul adds that our feet be “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” And in verse 14 we are told “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” We are to walk in peace and our feet will stay on the path of righteousness.
There doesn’t seem to be any protection for our back so I gather we are to face the enemy.
I try to have all the gear on; however, life gets in the way at times. My helmet slips a little and almost lets those nagging doubts in and then the shield of faith comes to the rescue. My best offensive weapon is prayer and with the whole armor of God someday I’ll really be an effective prayer warrior. It goes without saying that the heavy artillery is being a child of God and resting in the knowledge that I am where I should be
